ANOTHER WIN FOR WAZA

TAYLOR, MI - The Detroit Waza, last year's US Open Arena Soccer Championship runner-up, have again advanced past the first round, beating the Cincinnati Saints 9-2 at the Taylor Sportsplex.

The Scicluna brothers led the way for Detroit.  Dominic Scicluna had two goals and three assists and Tino Scicluna recorded a hat trick.

Drew Ducker also added two goals.

The Waza led 5-0 at halftime.  Goalkeeper Kris Lyons allowed just two goals and lost his shutout bid in the fourth quarter.

Detroit returns to action Sunday against their chief rival, 1790 Cincinnati Express.  Game time is 4:40 at Total Soccer Royal Oak.

DENVER NO LONGER WINLESS

DENVER, CO - The Denver Dynamite got their first victory of the year and it came over their closest rivals, the Ft. Collins Fury 15-8 at Bladium Arena.

The Dynamite had begun the season with four straight losses and allowed 48 goals.  Tonight they compensated for another shaky defensive effort with an onslaught of goals.

Tony Avery led the way with four goals and three assists.  Michael Ogletree was called up from Highlands Ranch and scored his first professional goal for Denver.  Goalkeeper Michael Archuleta added two assists.

CINCINNATI IMPRESSES IN VICTORY

CINCINNATI, OH - The 1790 Cincinnati Express stayed atop the Eastern Division with a 13-4 win over the Winchester Impact before 460 at Game Time Training Center.

Matt Breines had five goals and Jeff Hughes had four goals and two assists to lead the Express.  Rookie John Mellencamp, the nephew of the rock star by the same name, scored his first two professional goals for Cincinnati.

Craig Salvati went the distance in goal for Cincinnati making 25 saves and improving to 4-1.

Cincinnati improved to 10-0 all-time at home.

GOALS, GOALS, AND MORE GOALS

By Benjamin M. Wilson

LOUISVILLE, KY - Glenn Volk’s Goliath performance powered the Louisville Lightning past the West Virginia Quantum Force 22-1.

The Quantum Force were no match for Louisville’s, size, speed or athleticism. Leading West Virginia around the field as if they were a rabbit on string, Louisville’s enforcing presence scored 12 first half goals to West Virginia’s 1.

Volk’s dominating pressure and athletic ability was too much for West Virginia’s midfielders, and his 8 goals combined with 2 assists propelled the Lightning into the second half with a 12-1 lead.

For Volk there are lessons to learn to every game, even dominating ones.

“We try not to play down to our opponents level,” said the Lightning’s defender. “It’s hard for teams to pick up the pace [while winning by a large margin], but we had to remember to show them [the fans] we could play at such a high level for 60 minutes.”

The second half was a mirror image of the first. With 24 shots on goal and 10 goals scored, Louisville only allowed West Virginia to 5 shots on goal and zero goals scored.

The Lightning travel to St. Louis to face the Illusion on Saturday, December 19.

Detroit Waza vs. Ohio Vortex

WAZA VICTORIOUS ON THE ROAD

CLEVELAND, OH – Twenty-five saves from keeper Kris Lyons helped lead the Detroit Waza to a 10-5 victory over the Ohio Vortex at the Cleveland Multiplex.

It was another high-scoring affair with 15 goals in 60 minutes.  Tommy Eller led Detroit with two goals, while Steve Gillespie was among five Vortex players with a goal.  Forward Dado Girozdanic contributed an assist for Ohio, while Darrel Quinn added two for the Waza.

The clubs found themselves tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.  Detroit was able to take a 4-3 lead at the half.

The Waza were able to add three more goals before forward Adis Kuduzovic was able to sneak one past the Detroit keeper. This brought the score to 7-4 at the end of the third quarter. Dominic Scicluna would go on to score one of three Detroit goals in the fourth quarter. Ohio’s Israel Jones converted a power play goal in the final minute of the match to settle the score at 10-5.

The Detroit Waza (3-2) will return home to face a U.S. Open opponent on Sunday, December 13.  Meanwhile Ohio Vortex (0-3) will have time to regroup before facing the 1790 Cincinnati Express on December 19 in their final appearance at the Multiplex.

OUTLAWS SLIP PAST THE KINGS

KANSAS CITY, MO – The Texas Outlaws used an unconventional strategy to rally from a 4-2 deficit to beat the Kansas City Kings 7-5 before 573 at the Soccer Dome in Kansas City.

The Outlaws fell behind thanks to three goals from Kings forward James Katawja.  Alex Sabando scored for the Outlaws to cut the deficit to 4-3 at the end of three quarters.

The Outlaws pulled goalkeeper Adam Jochelson to start the fourth quarter and went to Jamie Harrigan as the sixth attacker.  The move paid off at 13:48 when Renato Pereira tied the game.  But Texas wasn’t done. A couple minutes later, despite the tie score, they brought Harrigan back out as the sixth attacker and got goals from Renixon Castro and Sabando’s second of the night for a 6-4 lead.

From there Jochelson permanently returned to the goal and the Outlaws survived a Milan Ivanovic goal.  Harrigan scored an empty net goal when the Kings went to the sixth attacker to ice the game at 7-5.

In a statistical quirk, Harrigan was the winning goalkeeper of record.  He was saddled with a loss earlier this year when he came in as an emergency goalkeeper when Luis Aldaba left with an injury.  The midfielder is now 1-1 on the year.

FARBER AND MOLINA LEAD COUGARS TO SHUTOUT VICTORY

SACRAMENTO, CA - Robbie Christner netted two goals in his professional arena soccer debut, his college teammate Brian Farber had a hat-trick and the Cougars left Estadio Azteca Sacramento with a 17-0 home win. California out shot Wenatchee 32 to eight, and scored a 2009-10 Professional Arena Soccer League season high 17 goals in the most lopsided win in Cougars team history.

An untested Jesus Molina needed just two saves to record the first shutout win in team history. Farber led the Cougars (3-1) with three goals and five assists for eight points.

Farber passed Bernie Lilavois for the all-time lead in points in the second year PASL-Pro.  He also extended his point streak to 21 consecutive games.

Forward Hugo Brambila scored two goals and four assists in his regular season debut.

The Cougars will play the Estadio Azteca All-Stars on Sunday at Turlock Indoor Soccer. The match will be California’s first in the United States Arena Soccer Open Championship Tournament. The game kicks off at 4:00 PM and tickets are just $10.
