Chicago Riot Drops Finale to Missouri
INDEPENDENCE, MO - March 6, 2011 - The Chicago Riot fell to the third-place Missouri Comets, 18-12, on Sunday to wrap up its inaugural Major Indoor Soccer League season at the Independence Events Center.
In a losing effort, Riot scoring leader Bato Radoncic tallied three goals and an assist, and goalkeeper Jeff Richey made 20 saves to surpass 900 for his career. Richey now has 904 career saves.
Chicago overcame a 10-2 halftime deficit to tie the score at 10-10 through three quarters. But the Comets pieced together another 8-0 run to seal the victory, with two of Missouri's final scores coming when the Riot had a sixth attacker on the field.
"We were down, 10-2, and the boys came back and fought tonight," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "I hate pulling the 'keeper, and we got burned in the end. But I'm proud of the boys. And give the Comets credit, they stepped up and could be going to the playoffs. They're peaking at the right time."
The Riot wraps up its first MISL season with a 5-15 mark, while the third-place Comets improve to 8-11 as they attempt to secure the third and final playoff spot. MISL scoring leader Byron Alvarez led the way for Missouri on Sunday with four goals and an assist.
The Comets got on the board first when Alvarez netted a goal at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. Leo Gibson had the deep send to midfield, and the Riot's Eric Lukin attempted to cut in front of Gibson's pass. But Alvarez had some space and shot the ball over Richey.
The Riot responded on a restart opportunity as Miodrag "Miki" Djerisilo tallied the equalizer at the 13:19 mark of the first quarter to tie the score at 2-2. Lukin drew a foul on the right side, and Novica "Novi" Marojevic spotted Djerisilo inside the three-point arc.
At the 2:55 mark of the second quarter, Alvarez struck again as he redirected Brian Harris's cross from the right side to gain the 4-2 lead. Then at 8:50, Alvarez notched a first-half hat trick to give Missouri a 6-2 lead as the Riot defense could not clear the ball on a couple of occasions close to the box.
The Comets extended their lead to 8-2 with a Mirsad Dzilic goal at the 11:13 mark of the second quarter. Harris had the long outlet pass and Dzilic had a step on the Riot's Brandon Corday, took a shot near left post and slotted the ball into the back of the net past Richey. Then Jamar Beasley pushed the Comets' run to 8-0 with a goal at the 14:20 mark to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.
The Riot was energized to start the second half, and Alex Megson tallied a goal for Chicago at the 42-second mark of the third quarter to cut Missouri's lead to 10-4. Chicago defender Will Kletzien and Richey worked on the defensive end to get the ball out of harm's way and the Riot pushed forward, with Radoncic assisting Megson's close-range tally.
Riot captain Fred Degand then was credited with a goal at the 2:28 mark of the third as his cross deflected off of a Comets defender and into the net to cut Missouri's lead to 10-6.
Radoncic pushed the Riot's run to 6-0 with an unassisted goal at the 6:47 mark of the third quarter to cut Missouri's lead to 10-8. Radoncic was double-teamed near the right corner, but he was able to turn away from the two Comets defenders and slot the ball past Missouri goalkeeper Danny Waltman. That forced Comets head coach Kim Roentved to use a timeout to try to halt Chicago's momentum.
Radoncic didn't have to work as hard for his second straight goal at the 11:24 mark. Lukin provided a solid cross from the left side and Radoncic finished with the chip-in goal to tie the score at 10-10, extending Chicago's run to 8-0 after Missouri had dished out an 8-0 run in the second quarter.
But the Comets finally ended Chicago's run early in the fourth quarter as Lucas Rodriguez earned a breakaway goal at the 30-second mark to help Missouri regain the lead at 12-10. Alvarez then garnered his fourth goal of the game as he maneuvered around Kletzien and Richey to take a 14-10 lead at the 7:08 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Riot came out with the sixth attacker (Novi) for the final three and a half minutes, but the Comets continued to add to their lead with Beasley's second goal of the game at the 12:10 mark of the fourth to take a 16-10 cushion. Stokic then sealed Chicago's fate with a goal at the 14:23 mark to take an 18-10 lead.
Chicago kept its sixth attacker out there and Radoncic scored his third of the game off of a Kletzien assist at the 14:40 mark to make it 18-12.
MISL Adds Wichita for 2011/2012
The Major Indoor Soccer League announced that professional indoor soccer will return to Wichita for the 2011-12 season. Wichita previously had an indoor soccer team, the Wings, from 1979 to 2001. The League’s Management Committee has granted unanimous approval to the new Wichita team, who will play their home games at the Hartman Arena located in Park City, KS.
“Returning the MISL and professional indoor soccer to Wichita has been a goal of mine since I joined the MISL in 2002,” said MISL Commissioner David Grimaldi. “Wichita has a rich history, having maintained its status as one of the most successful professional indoor soccer teams on and off the field. Even today it has a strong following and tremendous support from the local community. We are fortunate to have Wichita, Mr. "Wink" Hartman and the great Wichita fans re-joining the MISL. This is a great day for the MISL.”
The Wings will be owned and operated by Willis “Wink” Hartman, the President of Hartman Oil and founder of H2 Plains, LLC, H2 Drilling and H2 Trucking. Hartman has created or invested in over 40 additional companies including Hartman Arena, the Wichita Wild football team, Chester’s Chop House, H2 Plains, H2 Drilling and H2 Trucking. A long-time advocate for those who don’t always have a voice in the system, Hartman has been recognized for his community involvement, having received the Wichita Business Journal Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2008 and the Butler County Community College Mid-America Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame award in 2009. Hartman sits on the board of six Wichita organizations and supports more than 25 organizations.
"It has to be noted that in spite of the tough economic times we are all facing, the MISL provides fans with the "best-value buy" in sports entertainment,” Grimaldi said. “Our game has been in existence since 1978 and is entertaining, fast-paced, high-scoring, fiercely competitive and affordable for the entire family. This is a true win-win situation for the city and fans of Wichita and the MISL. We are also working on an upcoming announcement regarding another great market that will be joining the MISL."
Hartman Arena is a 6,500 seat, multi-purpose facility with 15 acres of parking. The building is subterranean (the seating bowl is located underground), which helps keep costs down for heating and cooling, and runs on electricity from a 150' tall wind turbine when there are no events. Recycled materials were used for the steel, insulation, and plastics in the building. New, innovative recycling ideas are in place inside the arena and carpoolers are rewarded with free parking at events. The Hartman Arena is also the home of the Wichita Wild indoor football professional team and offers several premium seating options. Cop Nets Winner as Chicago Riot Tops Blast in OT
BALTIMORE, MD - March 4, 2011 - For the second time this season, the Chicago Riot's Ante Cop scored a game-winning goal against the Baltimore Blast as Chicago earned an 11-9 overtime victory Friday in Major Indoor Soccer League action at 1st Mariner Arena.
The Riot (5-14) ended a four-game losing streak and became the only team in the league to defeat Baltimore (14-4) twice this season. Chicago's win also prevented the Blast from clinching the MISL regular-season crown and ended Baltimore's eight-game winning streak.
"It's about time for these guys. We've come up many times on the short end of close games, and they never stopped fighting, especially for the city of Chicago," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "We've been through a lot, but they know what it's all about. It was a good win all around, and the guys stepped up offensively and defensively."
Cop tallied the game-winner at the 2:11 mark of overtime with a quick turn in the box as Blast goalkeeper Sagu could not come out in time to prevent the attack. Cop has scored three goals this season. Cop's other game-winner was when he was in a goalkeeper/sixth attacker role, netting a three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining to beat Baltimore, 14-12, on Jan. 16 at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill.
Also noteworthy Friday was Riot goalkeeper Jeff Richey, who kept Chicago in the match with a game-high 19 saves. His counterpart, Sagu, made only four saves. On the scoring side, Blast defender Pat Morris had a hat trick to lead Baltimore. For Chicago, Alex Megson scored two goals, Novica "Novi" Marojevic netted his league-leading fifth three-pointer and Brandon Corday tallied his first goal of the season.
Next up for the Riot is the team's final game of the 2010-2011 season against the Missouri Comets at 3:10 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Independence Events Center in Independence, Mo.
On Friday, the Blast tallied the first strike at the 3:02 mark of the first quarter with Morris' goal in the box to take a 2-0 lead. Adauto Neto had the assist from the left side as Morris fought through the Riot defense and struck the ball past Richey's glove near the left-side post.
Baltimore maintained the bulk of possession in the first quarter, and as the final second ticked off the clock at the 15:00 mark, Morris notched his second goal of the quarter with a deep two-pointer near the top of the key to give the Blast a 4-0 lead.
Despite Baltimore's heavy possession, the Riot cashed in on a Blast mistake on the defensive end with a Novi three-pointer at the 1:08 mark of the second quarter to cut Baltimore's lead to 4-3. Sagu moved well out of the box to his left side, but the ball bounced beyond the three-point arc. Novi converged with a bouncing strike that found the back of the net.
Novi leads the Riot with five three-point goals, which also ties for the league lead with former Omaha Vipers forward Carlos "Chile" Farias.
The Blast responded at the 9:28 mark with a Matt Watson goal for a 6-3 lead. Machel Millwood assisted from the left side, Watson made a strong cut to the right past Novi and had plenty of shooting room toward the right side of the goal.
But the teams continued trading goals as the Riot immediately responded with Megson's goal at the 9:59 mark to cut Baltimore's lead to 6-5. Bato Radoncic assisted from the right side and got the ball to Megson who cut into the box and shot toward the upper right corner of the goal.
The Blast pushed its lead to 9-5 in the third quarter with Morris' third goal of the game, a three-pointer, at the 5:18 mark.
Chicago kept things close with Megson's second goal of the game at the 58-second mark of the fourth quarter to cut the Blast's lead to 9-7. Baltimore's Giuliano Celenza was looking to head the ball back to Sagu, but Megson stepped in between and capitalized on the scoring chance.
The Riot tied the score at 9-9 at the 10:30 mark of the fourth with Corday's first goal of the season. Fred Degand did the bulk of the work in the right corner as he spun baseline and drove the ball between Sagu's legs and right to Corday who had to tap in the ball for the goal.
For the second straight game, the Riot and Blast had to play an overtime match. Baltimore edged Chicago, 16-13, on Feb. 27 at the Odeum. But on Friday, Chicago returned the favor as Cop tallied the winner, with Miodrag "Miki" Djerisilo assisting, at the 2:11 mark.
The Riot earned its first overtime win of the season and is 1-2 in extra-time games.
Chicago Riot Falls to Baltimore in OT
VILLA PARK, IL - Feb. 27, 2011 - With the Chicago Riot playing the role of spoiler for the remainder of the season, the Riot pushed the first-place Baltimore Blast beyond regulation on Sunday. But the Blast pulled off a 16-13 overtime victory in Major Indoor Soccer League action at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center.
Max Ferdinand netted a game-winning three-point goal at the 5:15 mark of overtime to give Baltimore the victory. Before his game-winner, Riot goalkeeper Jeff Richey made several big saves in the extra session. But Ferdinand's strike above the arc clipped the left post and went into the net for the winner.
The Riot capped off their home schedule with a 3-5 record and fell to 4-14 overall. Baltimore improved to 14-3 and is one victory away from clinching the regular-season title.
Next up for the Riot is the team's final two-game road swing against Baltimore at 6:35 p.m. CT Friday, March 4, at 1st Mariner Arena, followed by a 3:10 p.m. match on Sunday, March 6, against the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center.
On Sunday, all-purpose player Ante Cop gave the Riot the early 2-0 lead at the 5:09 mark of the first quarter. Alex Megson fed Cop the ball in the left corner. Rather than taking the shot quickly, Cop, patiently waited for Blast goalkeeper Sagu to commit, finding an opening to net his second goal of the season.
Chicago extended its lead to 4-0 at the 8:52 mark of the first quarter by Fred Degand, who was coming off a one-game red card suspension served Saturday against Missouri. Degand had a tap-in goal at the right side of the goal, with Novica "Novi" Marojevic assisting.
Just before the end of the first quarter, Machel Millwood got the Blast on the scoreboard with a two-pointer at the 14:25 mark to cut Chicago's lead to 4-2.
The Blast's Matt Watson tied the score at 4-4 at the 1:33 mark of the second quarter, with Robbie Aristodemo assisting from the right corner. Watson then netted his second goal of the game, unassisted, at the 3:45 mark of the second quarter after winning the ball from Chicago defender Chris Brisson. Baltimore's 6-0 run and 6-4 lead forced Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft into using a timeout to attempt to swing the momentum.
Chicago's Semir Mesanovic ended the Blast's run with an unassisted power play goal at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter. Mesanovic took the restart opportunity from the right corner, the shot deflected off of Sagu and trickled into the net to tie the score at 6-6.
Riot defender Eric Duda then converged near the net as he shot the ball above Sagu and into the back of the net at the 13:47 mark to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Ferdinand took advantage of a power play chance with a goal at the 2:23 mark of the third quarter to tie the score at 8-8. Marco Sullo was called for boarding a little more than a minute earlier.
The Riot's three-point goal leader Novi netted a triple on the power play at the 9:56 mark of the third quarter to take an 11-8 lead. That goal came shortly after a Pat Morris tripping penalty. Novi has four three-pointers on the season.
Then the Riot's Alex Megson dribbled coast-to-coast, took a shot that went wide left but followed it up with a goal past Sagu at the 2:28 mark of the fourth quarter to push Chicago's lead to 13-8.
The Blast's Warren Ukah responded with an unassisted three-point goal at the 4:52 mark of the fourth to cut Chicago's lead to 13-11. Richey was on top of the shot, but he could not quite get enough of the ball to deflect the trajectory of the shot from going into the net.
Baltimore's Millwood tied the score, 13-13, at the 10:52 mark of the fourth quarter. Following an Eric Lukin penalty, Giuliano Celenza took a shootout opportunity. Celenza dribbled to his left and managed a shot against Richey, which was turned away. But Millwood quickly stepped in and finished things off with the power play goal.
In the overtime, Richey came up with several big saves in a variety of ways before Ferdinand tallied the winner at the 5:15 mark.
Chicago Riot Edged by Missouri, 9-7
INDEPENDENCE, MO - February 20, 2011 - The Chicago Riot could not hold onto a 7-2 lead in the fourth quarter as the Missouri Comets rattled off a 7-0 run en route to a 9-7 win Sunday in Major Indoor Soccer League action at the Independence Events Center.
The Riot has lost six straight on the road and dropped to 4-12 overall. The Comets improved to 5-11.
Chicago's hopes for the postseason are hanging by a thread, but the Riot is not mathematically out of the picture. The Riot needs to win its four remaining regular-season games and the third-place Omaha Vipers (7-10) need to lose their three remaining games just for Chicago to have a chance at the playoffs.
Novica "Novi" Marojevic had a three-point goal and Miodrag "Miki" Djirisilo and Eric Lukin added two-point goals for the Riot. In the net, Riot goalkeeper Jeff Richey had 16 saves, including eight in the first quarter. His counterpart, Missouri's Danny Waltman, had a game-high 21 saves.
Next up for the Riot is a two-game home weekend set that includes an 8 p.m. match on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Missouri, followed by a 7 p.m. match on Sunday, Feb. 27, against Baltimore at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill. Following the Feb. 26 match, stick around afterward for a free performance by Chicago band Riot Inside at the upstairs Odeum Lounge.

On Sunday, despite Missouri maintaining most of the possession during the opening minutes, the Riot got on the board first with Lukin's restart goal at the 3:48 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. Novi took the free kick at the top of the arc, tapped the ball to his right and Lukin slotted the ball in for the tally.
But the Comets were quick to respond with a Leo Gibson goal at the 4:31 mark to tie the score at 2-2. Missouri's Jamar Beasley took the initial shot, which was deflected by Riot defender Will Kletzien. However, the ball trickled to Gibson up top, and he had space to shoot.
In the second quarter, the Riot handled the bulk of the offensive possession, and Chicago also had a pair of breakaway chances that came up empty. With about 8 minutes remaining in the half, Semir Mesanovic's breakaway chance was broken up by Missouri's Brian Harris. Then with 4:30 left in the quarter, Waltman made a huge kick save with his right foot against Novi's breakaway. Novi attempted to beat Waltman to the right, but Waltman stayed with him to turn away the shot.
Shortly after the Riot defense held off the Comets' power play opportunity, Chicago took advantage of its own power play chance late in the third quarter when Vahid Assadpour was called for tripping. Novi's three-pointer at the 11:49 mark of the third gave the Riot a 5-2 lead.
The Riot then pushed its lead to 7-2 with a power play goal from Djirisilo at the 3:40 mark of the fourth quarter. The ball had bounced around in the left corner, popped out to Djirisilo and he punched it home for the goal.
But the Comets got right back into the mix with a Byron Alvarez penalty kick goal at the 5:43 mark of the fourth to cut the Riot's lead to 7-4. Shortly after one of Chicago's penalties expired later in the quarter, Assadpour tied the score at 7-7 with a three-point goal at the 8:26 mark.
Missouri then garnered the lead at the 12:06 mark of the fourth with Alvarez's second goal of the game to take a 9-7 lead. His shot from the left side found the upper right corner of the net past Richey.
In the closing seconds, the Riot had one last attempt with Richey bringing the ball out himself past midfield. But Richey's three-point shot went into the stands with 0.5 seconds left as Missouri held on for the win.
Chicago Riot Held in Check against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, WI - February 19, 2011 - The Chicago Riot fell to the Milwaukee Wave, 20-4, on Saturday in Major Indoor Soccer League action at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Milwaukee sweeps the season series against the Riot, winning all four matches this season.
The Riot fell to 4-11 on the season and 1-8 on the road. The Wave improved to 12-4 and is now a half game behind the first-place Baltimore Blast.
Next up for the Riot is 3:10 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 20, against the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center. The Riot's next home match is at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, against Missouri at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill. For tickets and more information, visit www.ChicagoRiotSoccer.com or call 630-708-6284.
On Saturday, Riot goalkeeper Jeff Richey made his first start since he injured his hamstring on Jan. 9 against the Omaha Vipers. Richey made 15 saves on the night. His counterpart, Milwaukee's Nick Vorberg, posted a game-high 19 saves.
Chicago scoring leader Bato Radoncic netted his 16th goal. Radoncic has scored at least one goal in his past four matches, as well as nine goals overall during that stretch.
Both teams played to a scoreless first quarter, but the Riot carried the edge in shots on goal, forcing Vorberg to save eight of eight shots on goal. Richey had two saves in the opening 15 minutes and was the beneficiary of a couple Milwaukee shots hitting the frame of the goal.
The teams' scoreless stalemate continued into the second quarter, but in the half's final minutes, the Wave offense mustered three goals in a two-and-a-half-minute span.
At the 11:41 mark, Marco Terminesi had a three-point strike inside the far right post for a 3-0 lead. Then 20 seconds later, at the 12:01 mark, Ian Bennett followed up his own rebound to push Milwaukee's lead to 5-0. At the 13:10 mark, Kyt Selaidopoulos headed in a Terminesi assist to grab a 7-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Wave pushed its lead to 9-0 with Ryan Mack's shorthanded goal at the 3:27 mark of the third quarter. Milwaukee's J.P. Rodrigues was called for a holding penalty against the Riot's Semir Mesanovic. But despite being a man down, Milwaukee found an opening. Vorberg had a long distribution that was flicked by Evan McNeley. Richey had to stay near the box with Mack running in from the left, and his shot found the back of the net.
The Riot finally got the ball past Vorberg at the 9:47 mark of the third quarter as Eric Lukin's right-footed strike cut Milwaukee's lead to 9-2.
The Wave answered, however, as Terminesi tallied his second goal of the game with an easy tap-in at the far left post on Hewerton's assist from the right side at the 12:04 mark to push the lead to 11-2.
The fourth quarter opened up as the Riot needed to make a run and the Wave tried to maintain the bulk of the game's possession. Milwaukee picked its chances on the offensive end and boosted its lead to 13-2 with a Travis MacKenzie goal at the 2:24 mark of the fourth. Then Milwaukee's Evan McNeley had a rocket of a strike with his three-point goal at the 7:50 mark of the fourth quarter, with a shot just above the yellow line.
Radoncic netted the Riot's second goal of the game to make it 16-4 at the 9:06 mark of the fourth with a power play goal. Miodrag "Miki" Djerisilo set him up, and Radoncic had the goal at close range on the right side.
Milwaukee continued to push on the offensive end with a power play goal from Hewerton at the 13:05 mark, followed by MacKenzie's second goal of the night at 13:25 for a 20-4 lead.
Now the Riot quickly turns around to its road trip against Missouri (4-11). Chicago holds a 2-1 series lead over the Comets, with the Riot last posting a 16-12 victory over Missouri on Feb. 6. With the Omaha Vipers losing three times over a six-day stretch this past week, the third and final playoff spot still is up for grabs as the Riot and Comets both have a lot to play for in Sunday's match.
Chicago Riot's 4th-Quarter Run Falls Short in 18-17 Loss to Blast
BALTIMORE, MD - January 29, 2011 - The Chicago Riot offense posted an 8-2 fourth-quarter run, but fell one point short as the Baltimore Blast escaped with an 18-17 win over Chicago on Saturday in Major Indoor Soccer League action at 1st Mariner Arena.
Riot target forward Anthony Maher tallied two goals, three assists and seven points after missing four straight games because of a cheekbone injury. Miodrag "Miki" Djerisilo added two goals and an assist for the Riot, which fell to 2-8 on the season. Baltimore improved to 9-3, though the Riot nearly overcame the Blast's 10-0 first-half run.
"We dug ourselves a hole early on," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "We fought to the end, but came up short. That's been the story of our life this season. But I'm proud of what the guys did in the second half. Maher had some big goals and assists, and Miki also stood out tonight with a couple of goals."
The Riot's 17 points represents the highest offensive total in a game this season, and it also is the most points allowed by Baltimore in a game this season.
Maher will be unavailable, however, for the Riot's next game because of personal reasons. The Riot hosts Baltimore at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill. The game is available through a live webcast accessible at MISL.net, and Spanish-language radio is available at LaMaquinaDeportiva.com.
Sunday's event includes "Chicago Soccer Heritage Night," which features a first kick by recently retired Chicago Fire defender C.J. Brown and the chance to see a long line of Chicago-area soccer greats -- from the Chicago Sting's Willy Roy and Pato Margetic, to Arlington Heights native and former Fire and U.S. star Brian McBride. Fans who wear a jersey of any former or current Chicago professional soccer team to the game receive a free Riot pin and the chance to have their photo taken on the field at halftime with these soccer legends.
Tickets start at only $10. Visit www.ChicagoRiotSoccer.com or call 630-708-6284.
On Saturday, the Riot got off to the early lead as Maher headed in a goal at the 2:48 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 advantage. Maher utilized his height advantage against the Blast's Robbie Aristodemo and snapped home the header.
Baltimore responded quickly at the 4:48 mark with Lucio Gonzaga's goal to tie the score at 2-2. As the Riot defense attempted to intercept, the ball found its way into the middle of the box and Gonzaga tapped in the easy score.
Djerisilo gave the Riot a 4-2 lead at the 8:14 mark of the first after Marco Sullo sent the ball hard off the left-side boards. The ball bounced out to Djerisilo in the box and he capitalized with a shot past Blast goalkeeper Sagu.
The teams continued going back and forth as the Blast's Mike Lookingland scored off a rebound at the 10:52 mark of the first to tie the score at 4-4. Worteh Sampson had a three-point restart shot, and Riot goalkeeper Ante Cop got in front of the ball but could not secure it. Lookingland converged for the goal.
Then the Blast took a 6-4 lead at the 14:17 mark of the first as Pat Healey netted a power play goal to take advantage of a Maher holding penalty. About 20 seconds remained on the power play when Healey scored.
The Blast maintained its momentum into the second quarter with a Carlos Garcia goal at the 3:09 mark, followed by a Worteh Sampson counter-attack tally at the 6:48 mark, and a patient power play goal by Pat Morris at the 11:27 mark to push the Blast lead to 12-4.
The Riot ended Baltimore's 10-0 run with Roberto Gallo's restart goal at the 12:03 mark of the second quarter, with Djerisilo assisting, to make the score 12-6. Gallo's shot actually deflected off of Baltimore's Zach Wilkes, and Sagu had no chance to get to the ball in time.
The Blast capped off the first-half scoring with Healey's second goal at the 14:07 mark of the second quarter to take a 14-6 lead into halftime.
The Riot cut the Blast's lead to 14-9 with Semir Mesanovic's three-point restart goal 27 seconds into the third quarter. Mesanovic's strike got past the Blast's defensive wall and deflected off of another Baltimore defender and into the back of the net. But the Blast responded as Gonzaga tallied his second goal of the match at the 9:14 mark of the third to push Baltimore's lead to 16-9.
Djerisilo scored his second goal at the 4:40 mark of the fourth quarter to cut the Riot's deficit to 16-11. Maher drew a pair of Blast defenders in the left corner, then played the ball off the boards and found Djerisilo in the box.
The Blast's Giuliano Celenza got the two points back at the 6:09 mark of the fourth with his penalty shootout goal, beating Cop to the right for an 18-11 lead.
Then Chicago went on a 6-0 fourth-quarter run. Maher netted his second goal at the 6:45 mark with a strong turn with his right foot, placing his shot inside the left post. Maher then set up Eric Lukin at the 7:52 mark and assisted Sandre "Sunny" Naumoski's goal at 12:14 to cut the Blast's lead to 18-17.
In the final minute, the Riot did have one potential scoring chance as Mesanovic played the ball from the left corner, trying to find Maher in the middle. But Sagu intercepted and made a long distribution to take some time off the clock.
Sagu had five saves, and Cop had nine saves for the Riot.

The team released Zlatko Zebic to make room for Myers, who has 73 goals, 33 assists, 168 points and 126 blocks in 160 games. Myers is available for both of this weekend's games against Baltimore.
Along with the new addition of Myers, Chicago target forward Anthony Maher returns to the lineup after missing four straight games because of a cheekbone injury he suffered on Dec. 19 against Missouri.
"We're always looking for veteran experience, and they are battlers who can step in and do the job," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "With Anthony returning, he's a big presence up there. And the target position is very important because it brings a whole new dimension to the game."
The Riot will again be without defender/midfielder Chris Brisson (knee) and goalkeeper Jeff Richey (hamstring). Goalkeeper Ante Cop will get his third straight start in the net.
The Riot (2-7) is coming off a 16-8 loss to the Milwaukee Wave on Jan. 22 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Chicago fell behind early, 5-0, in the first quarter and never could recover as the Wave improved to 3-0 this season against the Riot.
Kraft and the Riot are focused on minimizing some of the defensive mistakes and soft goals allowed during the road loss.
"Some players in the league, if you give them an inch they will take advantage," Kraft said. "We'd have stretches where we played hard but then we'd give up a soft goal. We just have to worry about what we do defensively. Offensively, we need to finish our shots, because we had our chances in Milwaukee."
Baltimore (8-3) is coming off back-to-back victories last weekend -- a 14-6 win over Milwaukee on Jan. 21, followed by a 15-13 victory against the Missouri Comets on Jan. 22. Baltimore's Sagu was named MISL Goalkeeper of the Week for his efforts, stopping 33 of 42 shots. Backup Baltimore goalkeeper Nick Hovaker manned the net when the Riot topped the Blast, 14-12, on Jan. 16 at the Odeum.
The season series is tied, 1-1, between the Riot and Blast. Baltimore earned a 10-6 win over the Riot in the first meeting on Nov. 19 at 1st Mariner Arena.
This season the Riot is 1-5 on the road and 1-2 at the Odeum. Baltimore is 4-1 at 1st Mariner and 4-2 on the road.
Cop Fuels Riot to 1st Home Win over the Blast
VILLA PARK, IL - January 16, 2011 - Chicago Riot goalkeeper Ante Cop was Mr. Everything on Sunday, netting a fourth-quarter game-winner, assisting a goal and adding 22 saves -- including one in the final second -- to lead Chicago to a 14-12 win over the Baltimore Blast in Major Indoor Soccer League action at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center.
Cop scored the game-winner with 23 seconds remaining on the clock -- a deep three-point shot just barely across midfield. With 2 seconds remaining, following a three-line violation, Baltimore was awarded a free kick just outside the three-point arc. But Cop dove to his left to stop a Giuliano Celenza shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Riot its first home win (1-2 at the Odeum, 2-6 overall).
Baltimore fell to 6-3 and sits in second place in the MISL standings behind the Milwaukee Wave (7-2).
Next up for the Riot is a 6 p.m. match on Saturday, Jan. 22, against the Milwaukee Wave at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Riot's next home match is at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, against Baltimore at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center. The event features Chicago Soccer Heritage Night. For tickets and more information about the Riot, visit www.ChicagoRiotSoccer.com or call 630-708-6284.
Adrian Bumbut gave the Blast the early 2-0 lead at the 3:07 mark off of an assist from Pat Healey. Healey dished the ball in from the right side and Bumbut drove the ball low past Cop.
Baltimore increased its lead to 4-0 at the 1:16 mark of the second quarter with Matt Watson scoring off of a Max Ferdinand assist. Ferdinand won a 50-50 battle against Riot captain Fred Degand, who played in his 100th career game on Sunday, to lead the Blast attack.
But the Riot needed only 19 seconds to answer with Alex Megson's goal at the 1:35 mark to cut the deficit to 4-2. The quick tally was fueled by Degand on the left side as he crossed the ball to the right and found Megson. Megson has scored a goal in four of the Riot's past five games.
Chicago then tied the score at 4-4 at the 4:53 mark of the second with Eric Lukin's two-point goal. Degand took advantage of a Baltimore player losing control of the ball and the Riot cashed in for the tally. Lukin, who had missed the previous two games for personal reasons, was wearing No. 15 instead of his customary No. 14 jersey.
Bato Radoncic gave the Riot its first lead at the 10:32 mark of the second quarter for a 6-4 advantage. Cop assisted as he passed the ball upfield with his left foot and found Radoncic darting straight at the Baltimore goal, splitting the defense. Radoncic dribbled toward the glass to the right of the goal and shot the ball past Blast goalkeeper Nick Hovaker.
The Blast responded with Pat Morris' restart goal at the 11:15 mark off of a Healey assist to tie the score at 6-6 heading into halftime.
Baltimore took the lead at the 3:52 mark of the third quarter with Worteh Sampson's unassisted goal for an 8-6 lead. Riot defender Eric Duda could not control the ball in the back and Sampson took control. He took one shot that went wide right of the goal, but Sampson followed up his own rebound to garner the goal. Then Ferdinand pushed the Blast's cushion to 10-6 at 5:12 of the third with an unassisted tally.
Chicago ended Baltimore's 6-0 run as Radoncic netted his second goal of the game at the 14:41 mark of the third. Radoncic redirected Marco Sullo's shot from the right side to cut Baltimore's lead to 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Blast had an answer, however, as Healey scored off of a Carlos Garcia assist at the 7:50 mark of the fourth for a 12-8 lead.
In the final 3 minutes, the Riot started pushing up Cop as a sixth attacker, and at the 12:28 mark Chicago struck with Novica "Novi" Marojevic's three-point goal from the right side to cut the Blast's lead to 12-11.
Then at the 14:37 mark, Cop booted in a long game-winner and the Odeum crowd reached its highest decibel level of the season to hang on for its first home win.
The Blast was shorthanded Sunday with three players suspended for the match following an altercation against Milwaukee the previous week -- forward Lucio Gonzaga, defender Mike Lookingland and forward Warren Ukah.
Rally Falls Short

VILLA PARK, IL - January 9, 2010 - The Chicago Riot fell short on a late 4th quarter comeback Sunday night, eventually losing 13-11 to the visiting Omaha Vipers.
Playing in their first home game in over a month, Riot midfielder Alex Megson got Chicago on board at the 8:05 mark in the 1st with a shot from the right side passing Vipers goalkeeper Jose Bontti. The Vipers answered with a last second three-point goal by forward Johnny Torres.
The Riot opened the second with a power play goal by midfielder Semir Mesanovic at the 3:05 mark. Omaha then went on a tear, scoring six points in a span of five and a half minutes. It wasn’t until the 12:40 mark until Riot forward Bato Radoncic stopped the run with an unassisted restart goal to score the last points of the half.
The teams came out sluggish after the break, failing to score goals until Vipers midfielder Mauricio Curiel Hernandez scored with 30 seconds left in the 3rd. Much stayed the same for the Riot as they surrendered another goal to midfielder Victor Quiroz. Degand finally stopped the slump for the Riot, scoring on a power play goal at the 6:13 mark. It ended a 23 minute span between the last goal scored by the Riot. Duda scored three minutes later to cut the lead to make the final score as the Riot failed to score again.
With the loss, the Riot fall to a record of 1-6 in the standings.

Festivities extend to halftime as a team of Elvis Presleys battle a team of Elvis Costellos in indoor soccer to determine the superior Elvis. The Riot (1-5) is coming off an 11-9 overtime loss to the Missouri Comets on Friday at the Independence Events Center in Independence, Mo. The Riot put together a 7-0 run that gave Chicago a 7-4 third-quarter lead. But the two teams traded goals throughout regulation until Comets forward Jamar Beasley capitalized with an overtime winner. Chicago’s defense turned away five Missouri power play opportunities, and defender Eric Duda had a clutch goal-line stop to keep the match tied at 7-7 in the third quarter. Recent signings Miodrag “Miki” Djerisilo and Brandon Corday accompanied the Riot on the trip to Missouri. Djerisilo had a block and shot in his debut.
Omaha (3-4) is coming off a 9-8 victory over the Baltimore Blast on Dec. 31. The Vipers overcame an 8-5 deficit by posting back-to-back fourth-quarter goals, capped off by Johnny Torres’ game-winner at the 11:53 mark. Carlos “Chile” Farias had two goals against Baltimore.
Farias was the driving force during Omaha’s dominant 17-6 win over Chicago on Dec. 10 in the only other meeting between the two sides. Farias had four goals, an assist and 10 points in that match, as Omaha overcame a 6-4 third-quarter deficit and posted a 13-0 run the rest of the way.
The Riot is 0-1 at home, with the only previous Odeum match resulting in a 10-7 loss to the Milwaukee Wave on Dec. 5. Chicago is the last remaining MISL team without a home victory after the Comets posted their first home winner against the Riot on Friday. Omaha is 1-1 on the road, with its lone road victory resulting in a season-opening 14-10 decision over host Missouri on Nov. 19.
Chicago Riot Nets 1st MISL Win
INDEPENDENCE, MO - December 19, 2010 - The Chicago Riot earned its first Major Indoor Soccer League victory with a 14-13 win over the Missouri Comets on Sunday at the Independence Events Center.
The Riot's Eric Lukin tallied the team's final two goals, Bato Radoncic had two goals and an assist, and goalkeeper Jeff Richey made 18 saves -- including a key diving stop in the closing seconds -- as Chicago broke through in the win column.
The Riot also jumped ahead of the Comets in the MISL standings. Chicago improves to 1-4 and moves into fourth place. Missouri falls to 1-5.
"This was a long-awaited win," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "We went up, we went down. We showed a lot of heart and character in winning this one."
Chicago's 14 points also is an organization high. The Riot had scored a combined 14 points in its previous two matches against the Omaha Vipers and Milwaukee Wave.
"We were missing some scoring punch, and we went into double digits in this game to come up with the win," Kraft said. "Lukin and Bato played a good game, and defensively we stepped up when we needed to."
Next up for the Riot is a rematch against Missouri at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Independence Events Center. Chicago's next home game takes place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, against the Omaha Vipers at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill. For tickets, visit www.ChicagoRiotSoccer.com or call 630-708-6284.
On Sunday, the Riot struck first at the 6:24 mark with a goal from Bato Radoncic to take a 2-0 lead. Chicago dominated with offensive pressure from the opening whistle, and Radoncic finally cashed in when he popped the ball over Comets goalkeeper Danny Waltman, who was hustling to the edge of the box to try and converge on the ball.
The Riot has scored the game's first goal in four of its five games this season.
But Missouri wasted no time tying the score at 2-2 when Vahid Assadpour tallied a goal at the 7:25 mark. Leo Gibson had the assist from the right side as Assadpour split a pair of Riot defenders on his run, received the pass in the box and shot the ball in between Richey's legs.
Tiguinho gave the Comets a 4-2 lead at the 1:46 mark of the second quarter as he won a 50-50 chance against recent Riot signing Sandre Naumoski, then fired the ball into the back of the net.
Chicago responded several minutes later at the 4:41 mark as Alex Megson shot the ball just inside the left post to tie the score at 4-4. Anthony Maher had the assist from the left side of the pitch.
The Riot then took a 6-4 lead on a quick counterattack with Chris Brisson's goal at the 10:44 mark of the second. Shortly after the Comets' restart, Richey distributed the ball out to Radoncic on the left flank, and he passed the ball into the box for Brisson, who had an easy tap-in goal with the empty net.
A critical moment for both sides came late in the second quarter and early in the third as the Comets had a two-man advantage to work with. A pushing penalty by Radoncic and a too-many-men penalty gave Missouri a huge advantage.
The Riot defense was able to withstand that stretch. But shortly after the second penalty expired in the third quarter, Missouri tied the score at 6-6 with Geison Moura's goal, followed by a Jamar Beasley goal for an 8-6 lead.
Riot midfielder Novica "Novi" Marojevic earned his first points of the season with a penalty-kick goal at the 7:23 mark to tie the score at 8-8. Missouri's Jeff Davis committed a hand ball to set up the Riot's scoring opportunity.
Missouri's Birche helped the Comets toward an 11-8 lead with a three-point power-play goal at the 8:44 mark of the third, capitalizing on Anthony Maher's hand ball infraction.
Chicago then went in a 6-0 run, starting with Radoncic's second goal at the 11:46 mark of the third to cut the deficit to 11-10. Lukin then gave the Riot a 12-11 lead on a penalty shootout goal. The primarily left-footed attacker went head-to-head against Waltman and maneuvered to his right for the tally.
Lukin then took advantage of a poor Comets clearance and earned his second goal of the match at the 7:27 mark of the fourth quarter for a 14-11 lead.
The Comets responded a minute later with Byron Alvarez's power-play goal at the 8:24 mark of the fourth. Richey saved Gibson's initial strike, but Alvarez was there for the rebound.
With 2:29 remaining, Missouri went with Assadpour as the sixth attacker. Naumoski tried to ice the game with 1:40 remaining, attempting to loft the ball over Assadpour. But Assadpour made the save, and Missouri attacked to the extent that Richey had to come up with a clutch save with only a few seconds left on the clock to secure the win.
