Enthusiastic Tamworth FC Supporters carrying out a project to document the history of the football club, since its beginnings in 1933, are appealing for readers to come forward and share their memories and any memorabilia or artefacts.
The recent 75th anniversary of Tamworth Football Club in 2008 and the 20th anniversary of the FA Vase Final appearance at Wembley inspired the group of supporters to find a way of recording, preserving, and sharing the clubs history in a unique manner.
At a time when football at the highest levels is getting ever further away from the grassroots, we want to highlight the exploits of a club which has stayed in touch with its' fans throughout the generations, through its steady climb of the non-league ranks, to its current successful campaign in The Blue Square Conference league.
Thanks to the efforts of previous generations of fans all the statistics were available to check and vefiry where needed, while local archives continue to provide a wealth of information and fill in the gaps. All the stats are now documented on the newly launched heritage website www.tamworthfcheritage.co.uk. The football club is an integral part of the town and the people involved, in whatever way, help make a football club unique so the aim is to bring the facts and figures to life with an array of video recordings and images from, of and by, people who have been involved in the club throughout its history be it supporters, players, staff or officials.
Impressed with the volunteers enthusiasm, funding for the project was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund via the formation of a special ‘arm’ of the supporters club (to comply with the HLF’s strict application requirements). None of the money received for the project can be used for any other means other than telling the story of Tamworth FC through the eyes of the community and so while the money definitely forms an integral part of the project's success the main aim of the project is to involve the general public in the whole process as much as possible.
The next phase of the project is now underway, with the group carrying out recording sessions in local community buildings around the town throughout October and November at a number of different venues in Tamworth - and these are listed on the front page of the website.
Readers are invited to come along and share their memories and TFC keepsakes with the group for use in the project; nothing is worthless, everything is of interest and any items will, of course, be scanned, copied or photographed and returned.
There will also be a display of photographs, old shirts, programmes, and other artifacts on display at each venue for people to enjoy totally free of charge. This heritage project, is run entirely by volunteers, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund ( http://www.hlf.org.uk/english).
The Heritage project team can be contacted via Dave Clayton on 07967 756918 or tfcsc-heritage@hotmail.co.uk.
And you can read all about the project aims (and more!) on the website www.tamworthfcheritage.co.uk.
